Shelf Reading - Media Collection

Purpose

To ensure library materials are neat and in their proper locations.

Overview

Media Student Assistants are expected to shelf read for twenty (20) minutes per shift. This is done to ensure materials are neat and shelved in the proper locations.

Required Knowledge/Skills

Swap Site, Library of Congress classification system

Safety Issues/Precautions

Some bending, lifting, and twisting may be required

Equipment/Supplies

Access to Swap Site, shelving cart, dust rag, pencil, paper

Procedure

1. Log in to SwapSite https://apps.valpo.edu/swapsite/.

2. Click on the silver tab labeled "Library Task List" (across the top, second tab from the right).

3. Choose "Shelf Reading (Media)" option in the drop down list.

4. Write down the call number of the most recent entry (located at the very TOP of the list). This is your starting point.

5. Bring a dust rag, paper, pencil, and shelving cart to the location of your starting point.

6. Remove materials from the first section and place them on the shelving cart.

7. With the dust rag, thoroughly wipe down the empty shelf and book end.

8. Carefully check the materials on the cart to make sure they are in call number order.

9. Place the materials neatly back onto the shelf from which they came.

10. After the allotted time (20 minutes/shift) is completed, write the call number of the very last item in the section that was
shelf read.

11. Return the shelving cart to the appropriate location (at the end of the DVD aisle).

12. Collect pencil, paper, and dust rag and return to Media Desk; log in to SwapSite.

13. Click on the silver tab labeled "Library Task List".

14. Choose "Shelf Reading (Media)" option in the drop down list.

15. Click the blue link that reads "Add New Row".

16. Complete the form by entering the final call number and time spent.

Stager Collection Books, Major Motion Picture DVDs (blue dot), Foreign Films (green dot), Academic DVDs, VHS Tapes, Audiobooks, CDs, and CD-ROMs
