Connect to Campus Wi-Fi - STUDENTS, FACULTY, STAFF

Students, faculty, and staff should follow these steps to connect any device to the secure Wi-Fi network on campus.

Follow this process for every device you want to register; you will not be able to register multiple devices at once.

Step-by-Step Guide - Recommended Wireless for Computers, Tablets, and Smartphones


This method uses Wireless Enterprise Security that some older devices may not support. If you have a device that does not support this method then you can register the device and use the valpo-media wireless.


Connect an iOS Device (iPhone and iPad)

  1. Connect to the valpo-user wireless network.

  2. A prompt for username and password will come up.



  3. Enter your ValpoNet username (e.g. jdoe1) and password.

  4. A prompt for accepting a security certificate will pop up. You need to accept it to continue.



  5. You should be connected and working on the valpo-user secure wireless network.



Connect an Android Device

  1. Connect to the valpo-user wireless network.

  2. A prompt for accepting a security certificate will pop up. You need to fill it out and accept it to continue.



  3. The EAP, PHASE 2 Authorization, and Domain should look the same as above.  You must enter valpo.edu in the "Domain" field in order to connect properly.

  4. Enter your ValpoNet username (e.g. jdoe1) and password.

  5. You should now be connected with full internet access on the valpo-user secure wireless network.


Connecting through Windows 10

  1. Connect to the valpo-user wireless network.

  2. A prompt for username and password will come up.

  3. Enter your Valparaiso University username and password. This is your domain username (e.g. jdoe1) and not your Valpo Gmail address name.



  4. A security prompt will pop up making sure that you verify you are in the correct location for this wireless and you can look at the server security certificate to verify. Click Connect to continue.

  5. You should be connected and working on the valpo-user secure wireless network.

Connecting through MacOS

  1. Connect to the valpo-user wireless network.

  2. A prompt for username and password will come up.



  3. Enter your Valparaiso University username and password.

  4. A prompt for accepting a security certificate may pop up. You need to accept it to continue.

  5. You should be connected and working on the valpo-user secure wireless network.


Connecting through ChromeOS

  1. Connect to the valpo-user wireless network.

  2. A prompt will come up requesting EAP Method and Phase 2 Authentication. Select PEAP and MSCHAPv2



  3. Fill out the "Identity" portion with your domain username and the "Password" portion with your standard ValpoNet password.  

Registering Devices Without a Web Browser

Streaming Devices

Use a wired connection for a better experience when streaming video or gaming. Plug your device (gaming console, Apple TV, etc) into the wall port with an ethernet cable with an RJ-45 connector, then follow the same steps as below.


Devices Without a Web Browser (Gaming/Media) Register on "valpo-media"

  1. From a computer already working on the VU network go to https://valpoconnect.valpo.edu/status.

  2. Log in with your ValpoNet credentials.

  3. This brings up a list of the registered devices on the wireless network.

  4. At the bottom click the button “Register another device.”

  5. Enter the MAC address (https://techterms.com/definition/macaddress) of your device into the field and click "Register."
    1. Sometimes this is called the "Wi-fi address" or “hardware address” and is in this format: A1-B2-C3-D4-E5-F6
    2. If you need assistance locating this address try searching online or contact the IT Help Desk.



  6. You'll receive a confirmation screen that you’ve successfully registered.
    1. Note the passphrase provided on the screen!

  7. On your other device, open the Wi-Fi preferences and select the valpo-media wireless network. When prompted, enter the passphrase you were shown.

  8. Your registration will be valid for one year; you will need to re-register after that period.

 If IT needs to change the passphrase for the network, you’ll need to reregister to receive the updated passphrase.


Step-by-Step Guide - Register a Device with a Web Browser on "valpo-media"

  1. Before registering mobile devices like Android, iPhones, and iPads you need to make sure MAC address randomization (private address) is turned off in the wifi settings for valpo-connect and then turned off again when connecting to valpo-media.



  2. Open your device's Wi-Fi settings and connect to the valpo-connect wireless network.

  3. Open a web browser (e.g. Chrome, Firefox, Edge)
    1. If you’re not automatically redirected, type in wifi.valpo.edu

  4. Read theAcceptable Use Policy and click "I accept the terms."

  5. Log in with your ValpoNet credentials.

  6. The device will be registered and you will get a screen stating the expiration date as well as the connection information for valpo-media.
      1. Note the passphrase provided on the screen!

  7. Go back to your device’s Wi-Fi preferences and select the valpo-media wireless network. When prompted, enter the passphrase you were shown.

  8. After connecting, "Forget" the valpo-connect network from the device's Wi-Fi preferences page.

  9. Your registration will be valid for one year; you'll need to re-register after that period. To make it easier for you, the registration page should automatically pop up and prompt you to re-register.

    If IT needs to change the passphrase for the network, you’ll need to reregister to receive the updated passphrase.

Troubleshooting

Trouble Connecting to "valpo-user"

If the above methods are not allowing you to connect to the valpo-user wireless network, then you may need to "Forget" the network from your device's list of trusted networks in order to start the process from the beginning.  If you have recently changed your ValpoNet password, then your device should prompt you to update the sign-in information for the valpo-user SSID.  If not, then try the aforementioned method of forgetting the network from your device and attempting a fresh connection.  If all else fails, contact the IT Help Desk.

Trouble Connecting to "valpo-media"

When connecting a new device to the valpo-media wireless network, make sure that the "Private Address" feature is disabled for the connection.  A privacy-oriented feature of newer Apple and Android phones, Private Address (or MAC Randomization) obfuscates the device's hardware address. It is designed for public Wi-Fi hotspots to prevent merchants from tracking users' browsing data, but in an enterprise environment like Valpo's, it interferes with your ability to register your device.  If you don't get a working internet connection after following the steps above, open your Wi-Fi settings and ensure that Private Address is disabled for both valpo-connect and valpo-media; then re-register your device.  If Private Address was enabled for one network and not the other, the device will need to be re-registered while Private Address is disabled on each SSID; failure to disable the feature on each network will result in an improper registration.
