How to Load a Student Sample Course Plan in Self-Service

A Sample Course Plan, found in Student Planning under the My Progress menu, is a suggested sequence of courses for completion of degree requirements. A plan can be loaded at any time, but is ideally used when a student is beginning their degree program. A plan can be added by either the student or an academic advisor. (*as of March 6, 2023 can only be added by an academic advisor). If loading the same plan for multiple students, a batch load process is available, please email helpdesk@valpo.edu with a list of student IDs, the plan to load, and the catalog year.

Step-by-step guide

From the Advising Menu:

  1. Search for the student for whom you want to add a sample course plan

  2. Select 'View Details' for that student

  1. Fall and Spring terms appear, by default, for the duration of the student's plan (program expected completion time). If your sample plan includes summer terms, add the summer terms to the student's plan by clicking the + sign (depicted below), selecting the term, and clicking 'Add Term'.

  1. Select the 'Progress' tab

  2. In the upper right hand corner, select 'Load Sample Course Plan'

  1. Enter the student's starting term (can use a past term also)

  2. Select the student's program (it will default if already assigned)

  3. Click 'Preview Plan'

  1. When the plan you selected appears, click 'Load'

  1. Click 'Timeline' for a user-friendly view of the student's plan by semester.

  2. Adjustments can be made at the individual student level to move courses, or select courses or sections from Placeholders

Notes & Tips

  1. Placeholders are not removed when a course from the placeholder listing is added. The placeholder needs to be manually deleted once an appropriate course has been selected to fulfill the requirement.

  2. If you want to start over, you can Remove All Planned Courses for each term, or for a single term.
