The Concatenate function, or CONCAT in more recent versions of Excel, is used to join two or more text strings into one string.

The scenario in this example: The following steps would help an academic advisor to use two columns from a report about advisees to join the student ID number and the academic program to create a column with the Key needed in Colleague to run a process such as BEVL: Batch Academic Evaluation and generate one PDF with all advisees' degree audits.

Step-by-step guide

There are two examples below: 1) Creating a Key column for use in Colleague and 2) Creating a full name column from separate first and last name columns

Example: Combining First and Last Name Columns into a Full Name Column (LastName, FirstName)

  • In Microsoft Excel, select a column for entering the new information.
  • Click on an empty cell at the top of the column.
  • Type the following formula:
  • =CONCATENATE(
