Common questions about printing services on campus.
Question:
Can I set up a printer in my residence hall room?
Answer:
Yes, you may bring your own printer. You will need to provide your own paper and toner/ink. Your personal printer should be directly plugged into your computer.
Question:
Can I set up a wireless printer in my room?
Answer:
Local printers must be connected via USB cable or Bluetooth to the device from which you are sending print jobs. Wireless printers cannot be authenticated to the network the same way computers, tablets, smartphones, and gaming devices can be, and the University's Acceptable Use Policy prohibits students from setting up their own ad-hoc wireless networks or routers on campus. A wireless printer that broadcasts a signal, other than Bluetooth, interferes with our network signals and is not compliant with our AUP. The full details of the Acceptable Use Policy are available on-line at valpo.edu/it/policy/aup/.
Question:
Can I print from my mobile device?
Answer:
Wireless printing for tablets, smartphones, and other mobile devices is available by using Google Cloud Print. Once it is installed to your Google account, you will be able to use it to print from any Google app on any device. If you don't have any Google apps, you send an email to print@valpo.edu with an attachment of what you want to print. Learn more about Google Cloud Print.
Question:
How much print quota do I get?
Answer:
The student print quota is $15 for each fall and spring semester, and $7.50 for each summer term in which you're enrolled.
Law students receive $17.50 for each semester, including summer terms, and quotas are not reset until after graduation.
The faculty and staff print quota is $20 each semester.
Quotas are assigned on the first day of classes each term.
Question:
How do I get more print quota?
Answer:
Easy! Follow these instructions: /wiki/spaces/ITKB/pages/28739004
Question:
How much do print jobs cost?
Answer:
Single-sided black & white printouts cost $0.05/page. A student's $15 print quota would get 300 pages at this rate. If you print double-sided, you'll receive a 20% discount, or $0.04/side. A student could get 375 pages at this rate with their $15 print quota.
Color printouts cost $0.25/page and are available only in the Christopher Center. Duplex color printing is not currently available.
Money-$aving Tip
To save money on multiple color printouts, print one copy on the color printer and then use the color copier in the Christopher Center to make additional copies. The color copier only costs $0.10/page and is capable of duplexing.
Question:
How can I check my print quota balance?
Answer:
When logged into a lab computer, click on the PaperCut icon in the system tray. You may also login to PaperCut with your ValpoNet credentials and view other statistics at: https://labprinters.valpo.edu:9192
Question:
What happens to my leftover print quota?
Answer:
Leftover print quota funds carry over from fall into spring semester, and from summer 1 to summer 2. All print quotas are reset at the end of the spring semester and again at the end of summer.
Question:
Can I transfer my extra print quota balance to someone else?
Answer:
Yes! Contact the Help Desk for assistance.
Question:
How do I actually use the Google Cloud Print option after it's setup in my account?
Answer:
Once it is setup, it is available whenever you print from any Google application (Gmail, Drive, Calendar, etc.). Google Cloud Print will be available to you as a printing option called "Crusader Printing."
Question:
How do I find the Crusader Printing option to send jobs?
Answer:
Once installed, whenever you print from any Google application (Gmail, Drive, Calendar, etc.), it will be available to you. It will show up in an option as a printing option.
Question:
Is there a size limit on print jobs sent to campus printers?
Answer:
Yes. Print jobs cannot be larger than 100MB or they will not be allowed to go through. Most print jobs should be much smaller than this limit.
Extremely large print jobs overwhelm our print queues, which leads to the print queue freezing and no print jobs coming out. This then further prevents other people from printing to the same printer after you do.
NOTE: this limit is currently not in effect in the VU Center for the Arts. It does apply in all other labs and classrooms, including Wesemann Hall (Law School) and Gellersen Center (College of Engineering).
