There is now a way to set up your Office Hours in Starfish to allow students who do not have a direct connection to you schedule an appointment to meet with you. (Direct connections are instructor-student, advisor-advisee relationships, etc.)

An example of how this will help students connect with you:

  • If you would like to meet with a current student who does not have a direct connection to you (through class, advising relationship, etc.), you can share your Direct Link so they have access to schedule an appointment with you. For example, a current student is thinking of changing their major to an area within your department. You do not have a direct connection to this student, but they are still able to schedule an appointment through your Direct Link. This update greatly improves the use of the Starfish Appointment option!

Below we will walk you through the steps to set up office hours for both your directly-connected students as well as those without a direct connection.

Enabling Faculty Office Hours for All Students

NOTE: Currently, this feature is only available for our full-time faculty, defined as those with titles: Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor. We are working to improve this feature to also include professional advisors.

1. After you log in, click on the hamburger menu on the top left of the Starfish homepage.

2. Click Appointments from the menu.

3. Select Office Hours from the Appointments screen.

4. The Add Office Hours pop-up window will appear. From this pop-up window, you will indicate your office hours. Under Appointment Types:

Select A, Course Related, for office hours available for students in your course(s).

Select B, Faculty Mentor, for office hours available for students with no direct connection to you.

These could be the same hours (select both), or different (select one at a time, repeat the process for each).

5. As schedules change each semester, we recommend adding a Start/End Date for your office hours so you can update based on your availability each semester.

Reminder: In the Using Direct Links for Appointments in Starfish article, you are shown how to enable your Starfish appointment calendar as a direct link.
