DOI numbering and assignment
Purpose: The primary purpose of this procedure is to explain the digital object identifiers (DOI) numbering strategy for CCLS natively published journals.
Overview: Below is a step-by-step process to creating and registering a DOI with CrossRef, our service provider. We will only create DOIs for professional journal articles in disciplines where DOIs are an accepted practice, including those using MLA, APA, or Chicago citation styles. Publications featuring creative work (artwork, fiction, poetry, etc.) would typically be excluded from this service.
See Scholarly Communication Services Librarian for login information.
Numbering for DOIs
Valparaiso University’s Crossref prefix is 10.22543, so all DOIs should begin with this prefix.
Determining DOI for a journal issue
Each journal issue should have a DOI assigned to it. To determine a journal issue DOI, add the journal’s last four digits of its electronic ISSN and volume (and issue) number.
Example 1:
Journal of Tolkien Research (ISSN: 2471-934X); Volume 2, Issue 2 (2015)
DOI: 10.22543/934X.22
Example 2:
Journal of Values-Based Leadership (ISSN: 1948-0733); Volume 6, Issue 2 (2013)
DOI: 10.22543/0733.62
Determining DOI for a journal article
Each journal article should have a DOI assigned to it, including editor’s note, commentaries, and book reviews, etc. To determine a journal article DOI, add the article’s Digital Commons manuscript number to the journal issue DOI. The manuscript number can commonly be found in the administrative view of the record and is also the last four digits of the record’s download URL.
For example:
Alvarez, M. (2013). The Role of NHS Leaders in Times of Austerity. The Journal of Values-Based Leadership, 6(2), 4. http://scholar.valpo.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1081&context=jvbl
DOI: 10.22543/0733.62.1081
Registering DOIs with Crossref
To create a journal issue and journal article DOIs, go to Crossref’s manual web deposit form (http://www.crossref.org/webDeposit/).
1) Select “Journal” as data type.
2) Enter Metadata, including new DOI, created per the schema above.
3) Select “Add Articles”
4) Add metadata for each article within the journal issue, created per the schema above. For the article URL, use the URL for the record, not for direct download. Publication Date is optional.
5) After the final article, select “Finish”
6) Login Valpo credentials, including scholar@valpo.edu for the email address
Adding DOIs to ValpoScholar
Once a DOI has been registered with CrossRef, add or revise the DOI to the specified field on the metadata form on ValpoScholar. Once updated, the DOI should appear only in the “Recommended Citation” field on the public version of the record.
