Purpose:

The Christopher Center has two (2) elevators to aid patrons and staff in taking items from one floor to another.

Overview:

The patron elevator in the Christopher Center is located on the east side of the building and is used to take patrons and staff easily from one floor to the other. The freight elevator is on the west side of the building and is used by patrons to easily go from one floor to the other, and by staff to easily access other floors with materials and the technical services sorting area. The Circulation Desk is in charge of unlocking and relocking the freight elevator during the day.

Procedure

1. Opening: Unlocking the freight elevator:

a. Take either the silver key in the North wall behind the Circulation Desk or the key in the safe closet marked “Elevator”.

b. Press either the up or down call button for the freight elevator.

c. Enter the freight elevator and turn to your left (the east side of the freight elevator).

d. Place key into Slot A, B, or C of floor lockout.

e. Turn to on. (1st floor should only be unlocked when there will be staff or faculty present)

f. Repeat step d for other slots.

2. Closing: Locking the freight elevator:

a. Take either the silver key in the North wall behind the Circulation Desk or the key in the safe closet marked “Elevator”.

b. Press either the up or down call button for the freight elevator.

c. Enter the freight elevator and turn to your left (the east side of the freight elevator).

d. Place key into Slot A, B or C of floor lockout.

e. Turn to off.

f. Repeat step d for other slots.

3. Emergency situations:

a. Stuck in the elevator:

i. If floor lockout is on, the elevator will still go to the 2nd floor.

1. If on the 2nd floor, press the door open button and exit when the door opens.

2. If on 1st, 3rd, or 4th floor select the 2nd floor and exit when the door opens.

ii. If the floor lockout is off, press the Help/VUPD button and wait for VUPD to respond.

iii. Calmly explain the situation and await help.

b. Other emergencies:

i. Make sure that the elevator is clear of patrons during emergency situations.
