Purpose

The Christopher Center has an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) in case of medical emergency. It is important to make sure that all parts are working.

Overview

The Christopher Center has an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) in case of medical emergency. At the beginning of the month, an email is sent out reminding departments to do a complete check of the AED to verify that everything is working properly. Any malfunctioning parts must be replaced.

Procedure

1. Remove AED from holder located on the north wall of the hallway leading to the ASRS area behind the Circulation Desk.

2. Log on to AED Checklist Administration (https://apps.valpo.edu/aedChecklist/index.php) using LDAP username and password.

3. Under CLIR, click box marked “Complete Checklist” on the right side of the screen.

4. Complete actions required for checklist

a. Foreign Substance:

1. Check to make sure AED is clean.

2. Clean where needed.

3. Mark ‘Complete’ or ‘Corrective Action Taken if Needed’.

b. Damage or Cracks:

1. Check to make sure AED is not damaged and is not cracked anywhere.

2. Denote where item is damaged. Contact Acquisitions about replacement.

3. Mark ‘Complete’ or ‘Corrective Action Taken if Needed’.

c. Examine the battery for bending or discoloration.

1. Check battery to make sure it is not bent or discolored.

2. Replace battery if it is needed. Contact Acquisitions about ordering new battery.

3. Mark ‘Complete’ or ‘Corrective Action Taken if Needed’.

d. Check expiration date on batteries and therapy electrodes.

1. Check to make sure batteries and electrodes have not expired.

2. Replace where needed. Contact Acquisitions about ordering new battery.

3. Mark ‘Complete’ or ‘Corrective Action Taken if Needed’.

e. Examine the accessory cables for cracked, damaged, broken, or bent connectors or wires.

1. Check to make sure all accessory cables are undamaged.

2. Replace where needed.

3. Mark ‘Complete’ or ‘Corrective Action Taken if Needed’.

f. Check Date and Time on unit.

1. Check to make sure the date and time are correct.

2. Correct where needed.

3. Mark ‘Complete’ or ‘Corrective Action Taken if Needed’.

g. This unit has been tested per operation manual instructions and found to be fully functional:

1. If everything has been completed successfully mark ‘Complete’ or ‘Corrective Action Taken if Needed’.

2. If there are issues that need to be addressed, contact Acquisitions about replacement.

h. AED Pad Expiration Dates:

1. Enter the expiration date located on the AED pads.

i. Battery Expiration Date (Note: the date listed is the manufacturer's date, batteries expire 5 years from this date).

1. Enter the expiration date located on the AED battery.

j. Response Team Members Identified:

1. Contact the members of Research who will use the AED if there are issues that need to be address before the AED can be used.

2. Mark ‘Complete’ or ‘Corrective Action Taken if Needed’.

k. Additional Comments:

1. If there is anything you notice that is not covered by this checklist, denote it here and follow up on the issue.

5. Click box labeled “Finished with Checklist” on the lower right of screen.

6. Mark on tag located on AED the date and your initials.
