Cataloging musical audio CDs

This is a quick method to find a matching OCLC record for the material, but you may not find all matching records because the 028 MARC field information is not required to be included on the OCLC records. You are looking for the best among what you do find.

Method:

In OCLC Connexion Client, Press F2 key
See the Derived Search line on the search screen
Look for the manufacturer’s number on the spine of the CD case or the disc surface
Enter that number as follows:

For example:
mn:724354503320

Verify the OCLC records found to look for exact match.

Be sure the 028 Marc field is an exact match
Compare records for a “best” match.

Notice number of discs indicated
publisher match?

Examine the MARC fields on the OCLC record in both the fixed fields and variable fields.

BLvl should be “m”
Date should match
ELvl. Is it I or K or M. I is usually a better record
There should be an 007 field similar to: s #b d #d f #e s #f n #g g #h n #i n #m e #n d.

Edit the best OCLC record just enough to export the record by doing the following:

make sure there is correct 007 field
enter our local call number: 099 ^9 CDISC|a1220
change 049 field to: IVU&
Place circular label on our disc
Place matching barcode label on the outside of CD case on the front, left and 2-21/2 inches down
Add your 949 field line. For example:
recs=b;dflt=medcd;ov=.b12345678;b2=d;ins=phv;i=987654321

Then, press F5 to export.

Enter the Galileo bibliographic record number on the processing slip

Press F8 key in OCLC to update and thereby attach our holding symbol to the OCLC record

Then,
In Galileo Sierra:

Scan the barcode label to bring up the bibliographic record. You will see the item record prominently on screen.

Finish editing the bib. record as needed by verifying:

Is there a 240 field (uniform title) title, publishing information performers
505 0 field good? contents need added?
500 field should have: Compact disc
511 0 field good? performers?
650 ^0 subject headings needed?
700 fields

Check for typographical errors throughout the record. You really may find some.

Attach call number labels to the case.

Have tattle tape inserted behind tray.
