Department: Circulation

Procedure: Emergency Exit Alarm

Purpose: To provide an explanation for what to do when the alarm sounds.

Overview: Circulation managers are responsible for disarming the alarm that is set off when a patron attempts to leave through the emergency exit on the south end of the first floor, as well to ensure it is reset and remains locked. We also record the image of the culprit to be aware of repeat offenders as well to identify who is setting off the alarm.

Required Knowledge/Skills: What alarm sounds like, where master key is, Divar Command Center.

Safety Issues/Precautions: None

Equipment/Supplies: Master Key, Command Center.

Procedure

1. If you hear an alarm that is not the security gates or the fire alarm that sounds like it is coming from the first floor, or off to the right of the circulation desk, then that is the emergency exit alarm.

2. Take note of the time so you can go back and look at the tape to see the person attempting to use the emergency exit.

3. Get key labeled 1st Floor Emergency Exit Key from key drawer at the end of the desk and head down the grand staircase toward the south set of stairs on the first floor, or send a student to reset the alarm.

4. Insert master key into lock on the crash bar and turn it so that the alarm shuts off.

5. Turn key opposite direction and wait 5 seconds for a click and light to begin flashing again to reset alarm.

6. When back at the desk, look through footage of the camera for the time that the alarm was set off in order to take an image of the patron that set off the alarm.

7. Place image in S: CLR Security folder for future reference.
